Granulated
rubber (GR) is an inert material that can be used to specifically
improve performance of concrete in three areas, by:
• giving
equivalent resistance to freeze/thaw damage as air-entrainment
• producing concrete with low thermal conductivity
• giving excellent resistance to impact.
The EC landfill directive has banned disposal of whole used
tyres in landfill and will ban disposal of shredded tyres by
2006. From 2006 there will be no other option than to recycle
post-consumer tyres.
Use of GR in concrete will contribute towards sustainable development
by:
• using
a material that has no route for disposal
• reducing thermal loss from buildings
• improving freeze/thaw or impact resistance and prolonging
service life of
structures.
